IPv4 vs IPv6 mobile proxies: test compatibility before buying

IPv6 can work well, but destination support, proxy transport, geolocation and policy vary. Here is a repeatable compatibility test.

IPv6 provides a much larger address space and is widely deployed, but that does not make an IPv6-only proxy a drop-in replacement for every IPv4 workflow. Compatibility depends on the destination's DNS and network, the proxy service, the client and any translation between address families.

IPv4-only, IPv6-only and dual-stack are different cases

A dual-stack destination publishes usable IPv4 and IPv6 paths. An IPv4-only destination cannot be reached from a strictly IPv6-only route without a translation mechanism such as NAT64. The reverse has similar constraints. The presence of a DNS A or AAAA record is a useful first check, but a record alone does not prove end-to-end reachability.

Do not freeze a platform list into a buying guide

Major services add, remove and regionalize IPv6 support. DNS answers can also differ by resolver and location. A static table becomes stale quickly, so check the exact hostname and action from the intended network immediately before purchase and again when the destination changes.

Proxy support has more than one layer

Record each layer instead of asking only whether a product supports IPv6.
LayerQuestion
Client to endpointCan the client reach and authenticate to the proxy endpoint?
Proxy to destinationCan the service open the required IPv4 or IPv6 destination?
DNSWhere is the name resolved, and which address family is selected?
Public exitWhich IPv4 or IPv6 address does the destination observe?
ApplicationDoes the real action work, not just a simple IP check?

Geolocation and reputation are database-specific

IPv4 and IPv6 geolocation databases can disagree or lag behind routing changes. Destinations may also aggregate reputation by individual address, prefix, ASN or other signals. There is no universal rule that every system blocks one IPv6 /64 or treats a large prefix as one identity.

A practical test matrix

  1. 01List the exact hostnames and application actions the workload uses.
  2. 02Check current A and AAAA answers from the intended resolver and country.
  3. 03Test IPv4-only, IPv6-only and dual-stack modes separately where available.
  4. 04Record the observed public exit, ASN and location from more than one source.
  5. 05Test authentication, redirects, downloads, uploads and any secondary domains.
  6. 06Repeat after a destination, DNS, carrier or client change.

TMPX product boundary

Dedicated HTTP and SOCKS5 product tests use IPv4-preferred dual-stack: ordinary hostname requests prefer IPv4, while IPv6 remains available when the client explicitly requests it or the destination is IPv6-only. VPN and Multi-SIM tests retain their product-specific IPv4 setup, and paid dedicated behavior depends on the selected configuration. This preference is not a promise that every timeout, TLS failure or application error triggers an immediate family switch. If an application has a strict IPv4, IPv6 or dual-stack requirement, test that exact workflow before scaling.

Frequently asked questions

Does an AAAA record prove a site works fully over IPv6?

No. It proves DNS published an IPv6 address for that hostname. The route, firewall, redirects, secondary domains and application action still need testing.

Is IPv6 geolocation always less accurate than IPv4?

No universal percentage applies. Accuracy depends on the database, prefix and update timing. Compare multiple sources and the actual destination.

Do platforms always block an entire IPv6 /64?

No. A destination can choose different prefix lengths or combine address data with other signals. Its policy is not visible from the address alone.
